NGOs' Demands for Promoting Coherence

• Development provides possibilities to stay in the home country and decreases illegal migration and crime related to it. The European Union must contribute to economic and social development of the countries of origin.

• The EU must implement coherent and comprehensive development and immigration policy by means of which it participates credibly in sharing the responsibility of solving the problems related to forced migration, including refugeeism as well as human trafficking and smuggling. At the same time, the EU must offer legal means to migration into the European Union.

• The EU immigration policy must respect international human rights norms and ensure appropriate treating of the people who need protection. The EU should find a balance between border control and the fact that nobody should be returned to an area where he or she can become a victim of human rights violations.

• The EU must intensify informing people on legal migration channels in the area of the European Union and the risks related to clandestine migration in the countries of origin. Few who throw themselves to the hands of smugglers know what will happen during the journey, what are his or her possibilities to get through to Europe and what is the life like in the new country in reality.
